what lies beyond the door of melancholy

I saw this most haunting music video (“Acid, Bitter, and Sad”, by This Mortal Coil), way back in film school.  It was given to me on a VHS tape, by an artist in the Goth culture, named Romeo Mikhail Benito Marquez. I finally re-discovered it on YouTube.

For me, the indulgent  melancholy title is a complete red-herring. This short video captures, in such a concise and nonverbal form, our intuitions about seeing beyond: being asleep, dreading true sight, and then heartbreaking glimpses of a higher, perhaps wilder self.
