In this spoof of 80s fighter jet movies (like Top Gun), there is a gag where a boxing match is being staged. The M-C takes a moment to call out the Pope to introduce the match.
For those not in the know, the Pope is the holy of holies, the most moral of moral authorities, so to see him step into the hyper-violent arena of a boxing match as a celebrity guest is quite a laugh.
But it is interesting to me, that if you had a dream of a boxing match where the Pope stepped in as a guest, I am sure you would not laugh. The joke would be on you. You will reasonably suspect the random gag must mean something more. There must be a hidden structure.
The spoof is a technique in dreams, combined with an ensemble of other dream techniques. Movie spoofs allow us to experience the pleasure of this dream technique by itself.
